Carnival: A National Archive
This marks a significant development in the national recognition of the Carnival Arts as being of considerable value for national documentation and historical preservation.
The archive will ensure the historic preservation of an incredibly powerful part of our culture as well as provide a resource from which a broad variety of people, both today and in the future, can enjoy, learn and gain inspiration.
We all have the exciting opportunity to create the first ever National Carnival Archive. We are in the process of planning the archive at present and we would like to hear your views on how you would like to benefit and be a part of the archive.
One options is that a carnival archive will be developed in a number of carnival areas. This will ensure that people of your area will be able to use and gain inspiration all year round from the carnival in your region. These regional archives would be linked digitally, enabling the carnival arts developed uniquely throughout the U.K. to be made accessible to the people both of your region and nationally.
How would you like your carnival archive to be? Some ideas carnival organisations have given us so far for the National Carnival Archive are:
An archive formed by the community for the community
An archive that gives credit to the people who have devoted their creativity, time and energy to carnival
An archive that captures the experiential essence of carnival
An archive that is dynamic and with movement, to allow people to grow, create and respond
A multi-media archive that is inter-active
An archive that is easy to use and access
An archive that allows people to develop skills and open up opportunities
An archive that facilitates learning and the development of the carnival arts
An archive that links Regional Carnival Archives with a National Carnival Archive
An archive that will ensure that the carnival arts developed today and in the past will be preserved for the future
These are some initial ideas. However, we would like your views on how you would like your carnival archive to be and how your community could get the most from it.
