mas camp
The skills needed to create a successful parade consist not only of sewing but also intricate wire work (to provide the frame for the giant costumes), boot making, working with aluminium, plastic and copper beating for more elaborate breast plates and headpieces.
In a traditional Caribbean mas, a band will adopt a theme for the year ranging from history, myth, fantasy or some more local interest. The band will be split into sections, each representing a different aspect of the theme. There will also be a King and Queen who will be dressed in highly elaborate costumes while the majority of masqueraders will be adorned in more simple attire matching tunic, boots and headgear. Mas is where the dedication to carnival can be seen as masquereders will be busy designing and making costumes all year round, taking hundreds of hours of commitment, skill and love to produce.
