
Luton Carnival
On the May spring bank holiday a years worth of preparation finally comes to fruition. The steel bands have finished their practicing the mas players have stitched the last of the sequins and feathers into their costumes the sound systems and DJ's are ready to pump out the best in reggae, hip hop, jungle, Brazilian and African: let carnival begin.
With over 1000 people comprising of artists, street performers, musicians and sound systems and attracting more than 140,000 people in 2004 the Luton International Carnival is a dazzling spectacle of artistic achievement. Over 30 floats, a hundred steel drums and the smell of jerk chicken and curried goat wafting through the streets Carnival is when Luton shows its mutli-cultural nature. Be it Asian, English, Caribbean or Irish, Carnival showcases the variety of the town and with the additional sounds stages all traditions have a place, from the celebration of nature to the striving for freedom and expression.
